Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court Practice Out Now!
We are pleased to announce the publication of a new book by Byron James of Expatriate Law on the Abu Dhabi Family Court Practice. In 2021 a law was issued which created a new, unique regime for civil marriage, divorce, custody, inheritance and associated rights for non-muslim and muslims who are not Emirati nationals in Abu Dhabi. This legal framework and the associated court (the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court), has been designed to meet the family law needs of the Emirate’s large expatriate, globally mobile community. This court is not just a new institution but has brought an entirely new approach to family law in the region – as it is secular in form, modern in practice and unprecedented in scope.
Byron James is a leading international family lawyer in the Middle East whose practice focuses on complex international family law cases involving high net worth and ultra high net worth individuals, novel and unusual points of law, is the first comprehensive study of this new court, its legislative framework and procedure. Based on the author’s extensive practice, this book provides practical pointers, useful checklists on specific types of proceedings and a clear, easy to understand explanation of how the court works, how it compares to other jurisdictions and how it might develop in the future.
It will also shortly be included on Lexis Middle East Law service and available to purchase in print.

International Commercial Arbitration in the Mainland UAE: A Legislative, Judicial and Institutional Assessment Out Now!
We are pleased to announce the publication of a significant new work by Dr. Emad Hussein — an independent international arbitrator, mediator, academic, and one of the leading dispute resolution experts in MENA — who brings over two decades of practical experience in the UAE.
Published by LexisNexis, this groundbreaking book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the arbitration landscape in mainland UAE, with a focus on the legislative, judicial, and institutional factors shaping its arbitration environment.
Dr. Hussein delves into the key reforms introduced by Federal Law No. 6 of 2018, unpacking their real-world implications through detailed case law analysis. The book offers a rigorous assessment of the UAE’s progress toward becoming an arbitration-friendly jurisdiction — and explains why, despite major reforms, mainland UAE has yet to emerge as a global arbitration hub.
What sets this book apart is its evidence-based findings and strategic recommendations, which aim to support policymakers, institutions, and practitioners in closing the remaining gaps and aligning with global best practices in international commercial arbitration.
A must-read for anyone interested in arbitration in the Middle East or in understanding the evolving dispute resolution ecosystem of the UAE.
