Guideline of Importing Organic Foods
1 - Introduction
Recent studies show an increasing global demand for organic products in general, and organic foods in particular due to their association with natural agricultural treatments, and the non-use of pesticides and growth promotors used in other similar products.
There is a general encouragement to produce this type of food due to its multiple positive effects, which include both health and environmental ones.
Organic food includes any raw or manufactured food that meets the requirements for organic production, whether from a plant or animal source.
This guide aims to set clear standards for the import of organic foods with the aim of:
Protecting the consumer from fraud resulting from the labelling of organic foods on foodstuff that do not meet these requirements.
Ensuring the rights of importers and producers to fair competition resulting from the prevention of adulterated food, as it is organic in contradiction to the actual reality.
Ensure that this type of food meets the requirements of the relevant technical regulations and standards.
Ensure the correct handling of this type of food, such as transport, storage, display and preparation.
