Starting an Arbitration at EMAC [Archived]
Overview
The Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre was dissolved in September 2021 as per Dubai Decree No. 34/2021. Its operations and assets have been emerged into a Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) (see Practice Note Arbitration Pursuant to the DIAC). Ownership of real estate, assets, funds, staff, financial allocations and membership base will also be transferred to the new Centre.
This Practice Note deals with the rules and procedures of the former Emirates Maritime Arbitration (EMAC).
This Practice Note lays out the procedure on how to commence an arbitration at EMAC.
Among other issues, notices of arbitration and the time limits that apply under the EMAC Arbitration Rules will be discussed in this Note.

EMAC: Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre.
DIFC: Dubai International Financial Centre.
Practical Guidance
The EMAC Arbitration Rules were adopted by EMAC’s Board during their first meeting on 23 June 2016. However, as the Rules themselves make clear, they may be amended by the Board from time to time to ensure compliance with developments in arbitration.

Article 2 of the EMAC Arbitration Rules sets out the rules for notice and calculation of periods of time.
