Practical Guidance

Below is a list of principles and ways of thinking that should be embraced and encouraged when using Legal Design:

Human-centeredness or empathy

It's of utmost importance to really get to know your users (be they internal or external clients). Building empathy or taking what we call a ‘human-centered approach' is the best way to create legal outcomes for your clients that will truly be used and valued. Here are a few tips:

  • Be sure to gain a deep understanding of your users - find out what their goals and motivations are, what they like or don't like about the current legal service, product, training etc. Are there any pain points or challenges?

  • Try not to take user feedback or comments personally. Think of them as constructive opportunities for you and your team to improve your offerings.
