As per Egypt Law No. 13/1968, as amended by Egypt Law No. 157/2024 (the Civil Procedures Code), the civil court system in Egypt is divided into three main types of courts.

  • First Instance Courts comprise the District Courts and the Preliminary Courts.

    • District Courts are composed of one judge and render first instance judgments in civil and commercial claims with a value not exceeding 200,000 pounds as well as other specific claims. Moreover, the doctrine of res judicata shall apply to judgments made by district courts with regard to claims with a total value not exceeding 30,000 pounds, meaning that these judgments may not be appealed.
