Piping in the changes
He sees Qatar as one of the great opportunities in the Middle East. “Qatar sees itself as a progressive member of the GCC, and a broker in terms of the wider Middle East. The Emir and the government are taking great steps to modernise the country, encourage FDI and and open the economy.”
He agrees the tiny nation is enjoying a boom at the moment, mainly thanks to the rich resource revenue Qatar enjoys, allowing it to deliver on its promises.
“The 2022 World Cup gives them a solid reason to get a lot of the work done. There is a clear agenda to work against, and open the economy up,”he said.
With this boom in mind, more and more international (and local and regional) legal firms are trying to get licensed in Qatar.
“But it's not the easiest legal market in the world,” said O'Grady, “There's a limited amount of work. Similar to Abu Dhabi, traditionally a lot of the work came from government or government-controlled entities.”
