Egypt Law No. 202/2020 on Waste Management was issued on 13 October 2020 and entered into force on 14 October 2020. Egypt Law No. 202/2020 replaces Egypt Prime Minister Decree No. 2005/2015 Regulating the Waste Management Authority, as well as Article 8 of Egypt Law No. 38/1967 on Public Cleanliness. Egypt Law No. 202/2020 provides that the Prime Minister must issue the Executive Regulations of Egypt Law No. 202/2020 within six months of its entry into force.
The Waste Management Authority
Articles 3-15 of Egypt Law No. 202/2020 establish a Waste Management Authority (the Authority) and regulate its management, aims and responsibilities.
Pursuant to Egypt Law No. 202/2020, the Authority aims to regulate, track, audit, evaluate and develop all integrated waste management activities. Egypt Law No. 202/2020 defines integrated waste management as “the integration between the different activities related to waste, including the process of limiting its generation, reuse, collection, storage, sorting and transportation to the sites or facilities designated for it; in addition to its treatment, development, recycling, and final disposal in an environmentally safe manner”.
