Egypt Nationality Law

Introduction

During the years following its issuance to date, Egypt Law No. 26/1975 Regulating Egyptian Nationality has gone through a series of amendments and additions. Regulating Egyptian nationality, Egypt Law No. 26/1975 has addressed how the latter can be obtained, eligibility requirements, required authority's approvals as well as cases for revocation of Egyptian nationality.

For the application of Egypt Law No. 26/1975, “nationality” may be defined as the status of belonging to a particular nation or an ethnic group forming part of one or more political nations. While a group of people who share a similar culture, language, religion, ancestry, or another characteristic that is often handed down from one generation to the next is considered an ethnic group.

Who is considered an Egyptian?

Under Article 1 of Egypt Law No. 26/1975, the following individuals are considered as having the Egyptian nationality:

  • residents of Egypt before 5 November 1914 who were not nationals of foreign countries and have maintained their residency until the date Egypt Law No. 26/1975 came into force;
