Qatar: New Residence Cards to Replace Residence Permit Stickers in Passports

Analysis

The Ministry of Interior of Qatar has announced that from 15 June 2015, new residence cards will replace stickers and existing ID cards and will serve as the only document to prove foreign residency in Qatar.

The new cards will replace existing ID cards and passport stickers and will serve as sole proof of identity and residency in Qatar. Residents will be able to choose between a normal residence card and smart residence card (the latter will offer the same services as currently available with smart ID card).

The new residence cards will be initially produced for new residence permit applicants as well as current residents who obtained a new passport, and subsequently for those renewing their existing permits. Residence cards will also be issued to children under the age of 16. The validity of the card will be one, two, three or five years in certain circumstances.

The features of the new residence card as well as application fee will remain unchanged.
