Recent reports suggest birth certificates issued to newborns in the UAE will only display the child's first or given name. Foreign nationals in the UAE should contact their consulate in the UAE for information on additional documentation requirements, as this may lead to problems with passport applications.
Reports suggest surnames are no longer being listed to ensure children inherit their father's last name in order to avoid conflicts with local legislature.
Though many embassies and consulates in the UAE have been notified of this change, delays are anticipated, as well as additional documentation requirements, when applying for passports for newborns in the UAE, as most consulates require the birth certificate list the child's full name.
