Egypt: Tax Department Considering Clamp Down on Outstanding Tax Payments

Analysis

The Director of Egypt's Tax Department, Mustafa Abdulqadir has said the Department is considering a new comprehensive plan to clamp down on outstanding tax payments, which have increased significantly since Egypt's January 2011 revolution.

Tax offices in the country have been ordered to prepare lists of all outstanding tax payments and report them to the Ministry.

The plan includes certain procedures to encourage the collection of undisputed tax payments. As for the payments disputed by payees, the Ministry is planning to propose a legislative amendment to the Tax Law to ensure the payments are paid through bank transactions to avoid bouncing cheques which are causing delays in collections.

He added the Ministry should introduce bank transactions to mirror the process adopted in the Customs Department.
