The sanctions imposed on Iran are the most extensive and toughest sanctions ever imposed on a country. In theory, certain sectors, such as healthcare, were exempt from sanctions, but in practice, most financial institutions have been reluctant to accept Iran's money for fear of facing punishment under the US. and EU sanctions regimes.
