UAE: schooling the investor

Analysis

With a surge in demand for 215,000 new school places by 2020 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai alone, the UAE's education sector is set to attract investor interest. Ross Barfoot, Partner explains that it is clearly even greater music to investors' ears, as UAE parents' stated desire is quality over cost for their children's education.

Where do you see the growth in demand coming from and what are the estimates for the private and public sector demand for schools? Which emirates will benefit and why?

The UAE education sector is gaining momentum and it is expected that both the private and public sectors will have a combined market value of USD 3.2 billion by 2015. This is primarily attributed to an increase in population. The private sector is expected to absorb the majority of this growth given the willingness of parents to spend on education. In Abu Dhabi, there are 200,000 students in private schools and the number of students is expected to reach 280,000 by 2020. In Dubai, where growth is even greater, the number of students is expected to rise from 225,000 to 360,000 by 2020.
