Dubai: Parent Sponsorship Rules Amended

Analysis

Foreign residents are now required to demonstrate they have a monthly salary of at least AED 20,000 and accommodation with at least two bedrooms, in order to qualify to sponsor their parents' residence permits in Dubai.

Background

Previously, individuals with a monthly salary of AED 10,000 could sponsor their parents.

As in the past, individuals wishing to sponsor their parents must demonstrate their parents' dependence on them and there is no one able to support the parents in their home country.

Further information

Other procedural requirements for sponsoring parents remain the same, including accommodation with at least two bedrooms, an AED 2,000 deposit per parent, and an attested work contract (if working for a private company) or an attested salary certificate (if employed by the government). A bank statement covering the previous three months may also be required.

It is not clear whether individuals who have already sponsored their parents will be subjected to the new salary requirement upon renewal of their parents' residence permits, or whether other Emirates have followed suit and updated the requirements for sponsoring parents.
