Analysis
Following the Qatar Shoura Council's review of a Finance and Economic Affairs Committee report, they have approved a law introducing a 10% tax on hotels and tourist restaurants in the country.
The tax would be charged on 10% of the prices charged by hotel facilities and restaurants. Half of the tax would be reallocated to training and rehabilitating Qatari employees and additional staff bonuses. The remaining 5% would be treated as sovereign taxation. Institutions which are classed as tourist by the Tourism Authority would have to pay the tax.
The Cabinet may issue future Decisions approving a reduction in the rate and further regulations clarifying the implementation of the tax will be issued.
The law will come into force six months after its publication in the Official Gazette.
