Egypt: Mobile Phone Call Tax Changes Drafted

Analysis

Following the introduction of a monthly stamp tax on mobile phone users (a lump sum of 51 piasters) last March, Egypt's Finance Minister Momtaz el-Saeed announced, on the 17 September 2012, the government was considering imposing a tax on mobile phone calls per minute. It is expected the measure would bring in an additional 5 billion pounds annually.

The new levy would be calculated on the basis of one piaster (EGP 0.01) per minute on every mobile phone call. The draft rate may be revised according to comments received from interested parties.

The new tax will be levied on customers but collected and remitted to Egyptian tax authorities by telecom carriers.
