Saudi Arabia: Introduction of Expatriates Tax Under Consideration

Saudi Arabia's Shoura Council has announced it is yet again considering imposing a tax on expatriates after previous attempts to pass a new law requiring they pay an annual income tax were blocked.

The Cabinet's Finance Committee Chairman, Saad Mariq, said although Cabinet lists prevented a recommendation from being discussed again within two years of its first discussion and vote, the recommendation would be presented again for discussion even if it is discussed during an informal, rather than a formal session.

The Shoura Council voted last April against imposing the tax because of the potential negative economic consequences for the Kingdom.
