A Bahraini MP has proposed increasing a 'tourism tax' imposed on top hotels to generate extra income for heritage projects
Ali Al Aswad made his proposal following talks with Culture Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa on spending plans for the next two years.
The Bahraini Parliament's Financial and Economic Affairs Committee has said that the Culture Ministry takes just BD 8,000 in tourist fees from five-star hotels and that more could be taken.
A Ministry official said that the ministry depended on donations and sponsorship to pay for its projects, but it is getting BD 8.722m for this year and BD 19.6m for next year in the national budget.
