Michael Dark and Mahmoud Awad discuss the unilateral sanctions against Iran and their effect on UAE businesses and their employees

Although there have been recent appeals to the Dubai Government by businesses to intervene and ease restrictions in trading with Iran, it is important to remember that it is not only the UN Sanctions which may be relevant or applicable to companies and their employees in the UAE who are considering trading with Iranian companies and individuals.

On 9 June 2010, the United Nations Security Council, by a vote of 12-2 with Lebanon abstaining, passed UN Security Council Resolution 1929/2010 (the UN Sanctions), the UN's fourth round of sanctions against Iran. The UN Resolution primarily focused on Iran's nuclear program, heavy weapons and ballistic missile activities. The UN Resolution also targeted the Iranian shipping and banking industry as well as expanded the number of prohibited individuals and entities.
