Waqar Zaman v Meinhardt BIM Studios LLC and Meinhardt (Singapore) Pte
This case involved an employee who had previously worked for a parent company in Singapore but had transferred to a group company in the QFC and had not been paid. A key issue was whether the court had jurisdiction over the parent company. Arguments included the ownership and group status of the QFC entity. It was also claimed that the parent company had taken responsibility for the QFC' company's liabilities to employees.
Background
The Claimant was Mr Waqar Zaman, a Pakistani National who at all relevant times resided in the State of Qatar. The First Defendant, Meinhardt BIM Studios LLC, was a company incorporated and licensed to do business in the QFC’. The Second Defendant, Meinhardt (Singapore) Pte was a company incorporated in the State of Singapore. While the Claimant was self-represented, the Defendants were represented by the law firm of Dr Thani Bin Ali Al-Thani. This judgment was confined to a special plea raised by the Second Defendant that this Court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the Claimant’s claim.
