Landlord – Tenant – Rent – Eviction – Construction
This case involved rent due and rent increases for a shop built in 1976. The key issue was whether the date the property was built impacted the laws which applied to the rent increase.
Background
A landlord filed a case against a tenant before the court requesting the tenant to vacate a rented shop because she had failed to pay the rent. The landlord said that the tenant had rented the shop in 1976 for monthly rent of 2 Egyptian Pounds and that the rent was increased by 5% under Egypt Law No. 136/1981 and Egypt Law No. 6/1997.
The court ruled that the tenant should vacate the rented shop.
The tenant appealed the ruling before the court of appeal. The court upheld the appealed ruling.
